After a well attended and respected Remembrance Day ceremony the rain was not going to dampen the quality game of rugby that was to come.
Sandbach, coming off the back of an awful defeat to Whitchurch, had a lot to prove, not only to the parents and coaches, but more importantly to themselves. There were some strong words said in the pre match huddle and the whole team seemed to have a steely determination.
Crewe & Nantwich won the toss and elected to kick up the slope in to a strengthening wind. The first exchanges were cagey but Sandbach stuck to the windy and wet weather game plan and started to dominate around the breakdown. Reward was a well deserved try in the corner. Sandbach built on their forward strategy and put phase after phase together. This resulted in a further three tries. Crewe & Nantwich certainly had not come to roll over and strong combinations between their backs and forwards put pressure on the Sandbach line. However, Sandbach were resolute in their defence and Crewe & Nantwich were unable to impact the score before half time.
Half time 27 - 0
Sandbach knew the 2nd half would be much more difficult due to the slope and even stronger wind. Sandbach made a number of changes in the pack. Again and again Crewe & Nantwich tried to penetrate and enjoyed some strong spells, forcing Sandbach to make silly handling errors and give away penalties by coming off their feet. Sadly, Crewe were unable to capitalise on this pressure and Sandbach continued to build on their forwards success and put the game out of reach.
Final score 39 - 0
Full respect goes to Crewe's players who's heads never went down and they kept going to the final whistle. We wish them all the best for the rest of the Cheshire competitions this season.
From a Sandbach point of view it was the best way to come back after a loss and the coaches believe you have still much more to show. Well done!
