Oswestry 0 – Sandbach 56
A convincing display in challenging conditions
With our 2014 fixtures drawing to a close we found ourselves making the extended journey down to Oswestry – and a game of rugby that could be described as both seasonal and traditional (in terms of the conditions in which it was played)!
A combination of the time of year and distance to Oswestry resulted in significantly depleted numbers of Sandbach boys (down to 18) – however, this still exceeded the number of Oswestry boys available – so 4 different members of the squad were lent to Oswestry for each of the two halves of the game.
Coming off the back of four straight, convincing wins, confidence was high and deservedly so given the fact that by half time we were already 41 points ahead. This impressive scoreline was the result of consistent pressure – despite the muddiest conditions experienced this season – and even more impressive considering the number of players playing out of their normal positions.
The second half continued in the same vein – with a couple of significant differences: Firstly, at times both teams seemed to forget that rugby is best played as a handling game, and secondly, Oswestry held their own – the result being only an additional 3 tries being scored by Sandbach.
As a result we finish 2014 on a major high – accentuated by the fact that try scoring responsibilities were distributed across members of the squad.
Roll on 2015!
