Sandbach U14 vs Telford Hornets U14
1st XV Experience
Taking to the first team pitch, against our “old tour friends” Telford Hornets, gave the U14s their first taste of a “first XV experience” – and judging by the performance and scoreline, it will be something all are keen to repeat.
Given the strength in depth of the Sandbach squad this year, two balanced Sandbach teams were lined up for two games – with the intention of providing all players, regardless of ability and experience, the opportunity to equally experience the big game environment.
Although Telford were somewhat depleted in numbers, meaning a number of the Sandbach squad got to play for both sides over the course of the morning, they started the first game in a determined mood and within a few minutes Telford came close to scoring – with only a last minute tackle saving the day.
Having survived this early scare, Sandbach began playing the sort of open rugby fit for the 1st team stage on which they were playing. After a challenging start to the season, it was a joy to be reminded of what the team are capable of achieving, both in terms of the performance and the result itself.
With the first game finishing 41-0, the teams took to the field for the second game – with the alternate Sandbach line up. Interestingly, Telford appeared to be more comfortable and as a consequence were only 10 points down at half time. Unfortunately, the second half of the second game was curtailed due to a injury to one of the Telford players, for whom an ambulance was called to ensure no issues with the neck injury he had sustained. Our best wishes go to him for a speedy recovery.
So, injuries aside, a great experience for all and another great day of rugby with our friends from Telford – we look forward to our tour tournament with them on the 1st March next year.
