Saturday sees the arrival of new opponents in Oundle RFC to Bradwall Road, who have come into the Midlands Premier this season, following promotion from Midlands 1 East, at the end of the curtailed 2019/20 campaign. Despite being competitive, they have found the going a little difficult, as they adjust to rugby at this level. But with a Director of Rugby, such as the experienced ex Northampton Saint Jon Philips leading them, Sandbach know better than to underestimate them. Oundle like Sandbach is a pretty market town, with a strong local identity and despite only being formed in 1976, their rise up the leagues, shows they have something going for them. Clearly, they have the local school, with its fine reputation for producing players, whose master in charge of rugby until recently was one Old Sandbachian, John Olver. The school helping to develop his nephews Sale Sharks twins Tom and Ben Curry.
Sandbach come off the back of a good win away at Nuneaton, where despite the conditions, they played some nice open rugby and defended resolutely when they had to. It didn’t come without some issues though, with Club Captain Jack Seddon breaking his wrist and a bone in his hand, putting him out for some time. Sandbach further will be testing the depth of their squad this weekend due to unavailability, as a few players attend the wedding of former player Andy Nash. (Covid has a lot to answer for, with players not getting married as planned in the close season). However, there are several players waiting for their opportunity and has already been proven, with 23 different starting players already being used so far this season, they are all capable of playing at this level when called upon. So, looking forward to another entertaining afternoon and meeting new people, roll on Saturday.
