It is with great sadness that we have to report the death of one of the great personalities at Sandbach Rugby Club, when Steve Reeves passed away this morning. “Trunk” joined the club in the early 80’s, when fellow Haslington resident Andy Cooper, brought him down to training. Having never played at school, he was rather raw initially, but having been an athlete at Stoke AC and showing the shear determination that he exhibited throughout his life, he went on to become a fine player. He started out on the wing, using his pace and power and was soon a regular fixture in the 1st XV.

Frustrated at not getting into the action often enough, he converted to the back row, where his fearless approach saw him regularly attending Leighton Hospital to receive a few stitches in his head. He was vice Captain of the 2nd XV in the 86/87 season and again in 88/89, often captaining the team and being its spiritual lead. He was also instrumental in the success of the 1st XV during that period, being part of the promotion squads in the Giro Bank Leagues and Potteries Cup victories at that time.

In the mid 90’s he was a key member of the 3rd / 4th XV which had a core of seasoned vets’ players, which he skippered on the park. Their impressive results a tribute to their mixture of experience, strength of mind and physicality. During the last eight years or so, he has been combating cancer in its various forms and in his typical style fought it all the way, but finally lost the battle. “Maximus” will be fondly remembered as a player, friend and great character.

Sincere condolences from Sandbach RUFC to Sue and Lily and the whole Reeves family.
