Yesterday (6th March) we received the news that Alex Burton the father of the former Club Captain, Coach and President Alec and Grandfather of current 1st XV flanker Ali, sadly passed away peacefully earlier in the morning. His daughter Liz and Alec were with him.

Alex was a player at the club in the early 70’s and being the strong character that he was, famously is best remembered for being sent off by his own Captain in one game, for moaning too much. He could still be seen until recently on the touchline with Alec, supporting the boys and providing advice and encouragement.

Alex also was a former President of Lasswade Rugby Club, who have had a strong relationship with Sandbach RUFC for over forty years. Alex helping in the move to their Hawthornden ground, which several of our members will have visited or played at.

Further Alex coached at Congleton tennis club, where he chaired the club for many a year and was the current President. Being instrumental in developing the facility and the clubhouse with his dynamism and utter commitment to the club.

For those wishing to pay their respects, the funeral is to be held at Birches Crematorium on Thursday 23rd March 2023 at 3.00 pm and then refreshments and a celebratory drink back at the club later.
