5th Team/Vets - 2009/2010
|
After a lay off of two seasons Sandbach Vets are back in action, led by ex first team captain Dave "Bails" Bailey, the Vets are Sandbach's only social side, and this season are hoping to play at least once a month. Anyone interested in playing or organising a fixture should contact Dave or the Club. For nearly 30 years Sandbach RUFC has fielded a 5ths/ Vets the first season was 1979/80, when the then Club Chairman John Cooper praised John Vinden for regularly fielding a 5th team. On the success of the 5th team In 1986 Sandbach were able to field a 6th team which lost to Congleton 4ths 14-25. Several years later after some sterling work by current Club President Keith Jones and Keith Burrows in attracting new players to the sport, Sandbach were able to regularly field 6 teams for three season from 1992 Since 1979 a series of Club Stalwarts have had the auspicious title of 5th team Captain: The late Mike Huntbach, Roger Amess, Chris “Pop” Allen, Clive Holland, Rob “Doctor” Dobson, Paul “Ping” Ingham, Graham “Craven A” Hockenhall, Chris Steel, Brian “Steep” Hill, Richard Horton. Playing as Sandbach Vets: Roger Bradley, Steve “Trunky” Reeves, and Robin Pipe. Since 2000 the Club has struggled to raise a 5ths/Vets side and for three season's they played as "Mel's Marauders2 manager by Mel Barber, and with some success as "Matt's Debaters" managed by ex Club Chairman Matt Alton. "Marky" Mark Smith had some success in raising a side but struggled to get fixtures, hopefully this season Dave Bailey will have more success, as the 5ths/Vets is an ideal way for older more mature players who still want toplay to continue thier rugby carear. | | Chairman's Latest | Welcome everyone to the new season - aren’t the grounds looking fantastic! Well done to Club Groundsman Richard Vaughan and Jon Stubbs for their hard work in the close season; the pitches look to be in tip-top condition. In addition, the building work is coming along nicely and the roof should be on soon and we hope to weather-tight shortly after that. The porch has been built and awaits finishing off, but we still need you to buy more bricks, so that we can put them up on the block wall by the main entrance. A news item has been posted on the website rounding up last season and previewing the season to come - please do have a look.
Buy-a-Brick – We are close to being able to produce our first sponsored bricks , if you would like to be part of history please contact Rob Mayor NOW! We have so far raised over £3000 against our target of £10,000. Your name on a brick in the Club forever! As part of the development plan, we are raising funds by selling named bricks that will be incorporated into the proposed porch/foyer area. Personalised bricks are available at just £100 each, with all funds going directly towards the redevelopment – not bad for a permanent mark or tribute! Please contact your team manager or me and please support your Club in our efforts to improve the clubhouse. Finally, you may have heard of Utility Warehouse, the "one stop shop" for all your utilities. Not only are you likely to save money on those essential needs, such as electricity, gas, telephone, internet and mobile, but Sandbach RUFC receive an additional monetary benefit for each member who signs up and everytime a bill is paid. So, help yourselves and Sandbach RUFC at the same time. Click on the advert opposite.
