Under 13
Sandbach 39 - Winnington Park 5
Sun 14 October 2001
Sandbach Under 13's continued their season with a game against local rivals Winnington Park.
Winnigton Park arrived with a squad of 23 players and as Sandbach had 27 it was agreed to play with rolling substitions so as to give as many boys the chance to play as possible.
The game started with Winnington kicking off and straight away Sandbach were on the attack with their forwards producing good quick ball and the backs running and passing well. At first Winnington tackled quite well but soon Sandbach's superior skills and fitness started to show. After again producing quick ball from a ruck they attacked on the open side and from the next ruck then went blind. AB gave a nicely timed pass to Sam (Jonah Lomu) Sherrat to score untouched under the posts.
Sandbach continued to dominate the game, with the backs were now showing good handling skills, running angles and with the forwards always in support further tries soon followed. From a scrum near the Winnington line AB and Will Cliffe did a neat scissors and Cliffe scored again under the posts.
From the resulting kick off Winnington tried to switch the play but Cliffe fielded the kick and passed to Jack Seddon who ran through the cover defence from half way to score another try.
Sandbach continued their attacks all through the rest of the half. The Winnington scrum,
although being bigger in nearly every department, were constantly under pressure with the Sandbach front row of Andrew (Exocet) Nash, Ben Phillips and Ryan Connelly taking many balls against the head and from one of these Richard Murray scored the next try in the left hand corner.
Unfortunately AB did not have his kicking boots on so plenty of practise on Wednesday required.
Half Time: Sandbach 22 - Winnington Park 0
In the second half both sides made changes but Sandbach continued to have the better of the exchanges. From one piece of Winnington pressure Eddie (Billy Whiz) Taylor pounced on the loose ball and then ran 70 metres, leaving defenders lying all over the pitch to score again under the posts. Will Cargill converted.
Winnington did manage to score one try in this period but Sandbach also scored further tries from Luke Davenport, with a nice side stepping run, and Sam Sherratt with another strong run to the corner.
Another good display from the lads and all but Adam got to play but he did play for the Under 14's.
