A 15-5 victory for Sandbach Senior Colts in their final league fixture against Ashton-on-Mersey secured the "Calendar Boys" the league title.
Watched by a large crowd at Bradwall Road the match, which was refereed by International official Steve Lander of the RFU, was played in very difficult weather conditions. Ashton, who themselves had a chance for the title, proved tough opponents.
Defending a very strong wind in the first half Sandbach scored an early try by Dan Massey to settle their nerves and despite a quick response by Ashton held the visitors to 5-5 at half time. In the second half and with the wind advantage Sandbach's superior pace and fitness proved decisive and two further unconverted tries by Massey and Tim Jones secured the necessary win.
The victorious squad celebrated with an after match "Calendar" streak and long in to the evening in a more traditional manner.
The "Colts Calendar" was a highly sought after item throughout the club and beyond and succeeded in its aim of financing a mid season tour to Edinburgh. Many of the squad successfully stepped up to play Saturday rugby with the 1st's and 2nd's and produced eight Cheshire representations.
