Wirral 20 - Sandbach 14 Sat 10 February 2001 Sandbach had played and beaten this Wirral side 15-12 earlier in the season so after their current string of defeats they were looking forward to the trip to Clatterbridge. Gavin had to dig deep into his resources to provide a side for this game. (Not knowing that the 5ths Team's game against Liverpool St. Helen's had been called off.) This meant that two 'guests' had to play, Al Wheatley and Tim Hooper (mates of Geof Chan) and Gavin also pulled from the hat Sandbach's ex captain Paddy Davenport. Sandbach started the game with 14 men as Scrum half Dave Crossier was ten minutes late, this meant that captain Gavin smith had to play as a flanker in the scrums and a scrum half at line outs. With the weight and experience in the pack, Sandbach won most of the set piece ball, they won most of the line outs with second row Paddy leaping like a salmon (tin of!) and took eight scrums against the head. With all of this possession Sandbach just could not get it together and missed chance after chance.
