Sandbach 30 - Denbigh 0 |

Sun 24 October 2004
Denbigh 24th October 2004
A late arranged fixture against Denbigh saw Sandbach U9s once again show how well players are taking to contact rugby. Following our match at Ruthin last week, Sandbach arranged a session on Mauling to ensure we protected the ball in contact. This was to prove extremely beneficial, both in attack and defence.
Squad: Chris Jackson, Kieran Leese, Charlie Rogerson, Megan Standring, Harry Broady, Matthew Mangan, Adam Lockett, James Barry, Max Bonar-Law, Jake Harrison, Joseph Jackson, Joe Stock, Thomas Stakes, Loucas Thomas-Garrett, Danny Owen, Anthony Dowell, Rhys Robinson
Match 1: Sandbach 30, Denbigh 0
Try scorer: Kieran Leese (2), Joe Jackson, James Barry, Charlie Rogerson, Jake Harrison
The first match saw Sandbach start strongly and dominate territory. A typical darting run from Kieran Leese, followed by a try from Joe Jackson (benefiting from a interception from Charlie Rogerson), saw Sandbach off to the best possible start. By half time, the score was 15 – 0 as James Barry proved too powerful for the Denbigh defence and forced his way over before the whistle.
The second half saw Denbigh battle back and only some last ditch tackling from Megan Standring and Thomas Stakes prevented Denbigh from scoring. Strong running from Joe Stock and some excellent mauling from Matthew Mangan, allowed Sandbach back into the game and begin to spread the ball wide allowing our speedsters to capitalise. Kieran Leese, Charlie Rogerson and Jake Harrison all scored before the end of the game.
Match 2: Sandbach 30 Denbigh 5
Try scorers : Danny Owen, Charlie Rogerson (3), Kieran Leese, Joe Jackson
The second game allowed Sandbach to field a strong team against Denbigh who only had the minimum 9 players. Charlie Rogerson Joe Jackson and Kieran Leese playing their second game of the day. Once again Sandbach dominated the early exchanges. Danny Owen ripping the ball from a maul (obviously listening carefully during the pre-game coaching) and streaking away to score the first try. Some excellent support play and ball retention from Anthony Dowell and Chris Jackson allow Charlie Rogerson the space to score the next three tries.
Second half Denbigh came back strongly, determined to go home with a score. However, Sandbach had other ideas and Kieran Leese darted over to score his third try of the day. From the re-start, Denbigh attacked running strongly down the left wing, only to be met by Harry “dump truck” Broady, who proceeded to tackle the Denbigh player into touch, but not before he drove him back 2 metres. From the line out, excellent handling from Rhys Robinson and Max Bonar-Law allowed Sandbach to attack, only to be tackled into touch just short of the try line. From the ensuing lineout, pressure from Kieran Leese and Joe Jackson saw Denbigh spill the ball and Joe Jackson dive on it to score.
The final say was left to Denbigh who never gave up and continued to pressure the Sandbach defence. From a penalty, they attacked, but once again Harry “dump truck” Broady, tackling well above his weight, saved a certain try. However, Denbigh recycled the ball and scored in the corner.
An excellent mornings Rugby, showing all concerned how far we have moved since the start of the season. Thanks to the Denbigh players and coach for an excellent game.
