Very sad news for Sandbach Rugby Club and all our members is that Adge passed away last night after a long brave fight against cancer

Adge was a Sandbach RUFC man through and through, even when bravely fighting cancer he was still attending most of the 1st team games home and away when he would travel on the team coach. His last game watching the 1st team was only a week ago at the away game at Derby.

Adge was at Sandbach school in the 50’s and as a scrum half played and was captain of Old Sandbachians in the 60’s. The picture shows him as captain in the centre of the front row holding the ball. After finishing playing Adge was a lifetime supporter of the club, being club coach in the 80’s, president from 94-96 and a committee member for many years. He was the first guy I met when I turned up at the pre season of 1987 after moving from Leeds. Adge was then the club coach and he immediately made me very welcome and we became good friends and I took over from Adge the next season when he stepped down as coach.

Adge worked for Michelin and had spells in France and also in Nova Scotia Canada where he was very proud in setting up a new rugby club called Pictou County who went on dominate rugby in Nova Scotia. One of Adge’s proudest moments was when they came to tour the UK and played Sandbach in 1993, suffice to say it was a great stay in Sandbach and we all have hazy memories of the game and their stay.

Our thoughts are with Sandra, Adge’s three daughters and eight grandchildren who have requested a quiet close family funeral. We can all remember Adge and pay our respects at the next Sandbach home game against Nuneaton on 1st October.
