What does Shirty think?

The thoughts of Pete Sherratt

Hinckley remain joint top of the league after a relatively comfortable home win 32-20 against local rivals Syston. Old Halesonians are their partners at the top and they took the spoils at home to Sandbach who by all accounts ran them close for much of the game.
Two sides that have had a stuttering start seem now to have settled. Sutton Coldfield will be feeling better about life after taking a valuable scalp at Newport; 12-31 the score here. Equally, Birmingham and Solihull took advantage of Longton’s woes and took the spoils 15-23.

Scunthorpe will also have enjoyed the coach journey back from Nuneaton having enjoyed a 19-30 victory. Other away victories were recorded by Peterborough Lions who squeezed home against today’s visitors, Old Northamptonians 17-18 and Bromsgrove who also had the better of a tight encounter at Lichfield 22-25.

This week sees a number of games that could go either way. Sutton Coldfield entertain Nuneaton and with neither enjoying being in the bottom half of the league each will be looking to kick on with a valuable win. Expect Lichfield to have a real go at Hinckley but realistically the Staffordshire side are unlikely to have the forward fire power to topple Hinckley from top spot.

Old Halesonians are faced with a tough assignment away at Scunny who are starting to get their season on track. I’ll keep my money in my pocket for this one. Wouldn’t want to call the Bees/Newport game either, this looks like being a tight affair.

Bromsgrove should comfortably see off Longton who already are looking like one of the season’s strugglers. Syston entertain Peterborough who, on paper should be stronger but seem a little out of sorts at the moment.

Which brings us to Saturday's game at Bradwall Road where the home team entertain Old Northamptonians for the first time. The visitors have yet to record a win but they have had close scores against Lions and Syston so will be looking at Sandbach lying 9th and perhaps see an opportunity today. The home team will be looking to rediscover the form of 2 weeks ago which saw them beat Nuns and should be paying attention to discipline and bringing a more clinical approach to their game.
